Cultural Adaptation, Translation, and Psychometric Evaluation of the Arabic UW-QoL
Overview
This study translated and validated the Arabic version of the UW-QoL v4 for head and neck cancer patients in Jordan. The Arabic UW-QoL v4 demonstrated good internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
Background
Assessing health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) is essential for understanding the impact of head and neck cancer (HNC) on patients' lives. The University of Washington Quality of Life Questionnaire (UW-QoL) is a recognized tool for evaluating HR-QoL in HNC patients, but its applicability in non-English speaking populations has been limited. This study addresses the need for a culturally adapted and validated Arabic version of the UW-QoL for Jordanian patients.

Key Findings
The Arabic UW-QoL v4 showed good internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.89.
Test-retest reliability was excellent, with an ICC of 0.95 for the total score.
Exploratory PCA indicated a two-component solution with eigenvalues of 5.67 and 1.06.
Floor effects ranged from 4.1% to 14.3%, while ceiling effects ranged from 26.5% to 50.0%.
Higher total scores were observed in patients with early-stage tumors compared to advanced stages (p = 0.0025).
Clinical Implications
The validated Arabic UW-QoL v4 can be utilized in clinical settings to assess HR-QoL among Jordanian HNC patients.
Conclusion
The Arabic version of the UW-QoL v4 is a reliable and culturally appropriate instrument for assessing quality of life in Jordanian head and neck cancer patients.
