Clinical Report: Long-term effectiveness of neural circuit blockade in blepharospasm

Overview

This study evaluates the long-term efficacy of neural circuit blockade (NCB) in managing blepharospasm. A retrospective analysis of 570 patients showed that NCB led to a reduction in dystonia scores.

Background

Blepharospasm is a debilitating form of focal dystonia that can result in functional blindness and severely impacts quality of life. Current treatment options, including botulinum toxin injections and surgical interventions, often yield unsatisfactory results.

Data Highlights

MeasurePreoperativePostoperative
Shorr grading scaleGrade 4: 97.9%Grade 0: 87.5%
BFMDRS-M (eye)8.00.0
BFMDRS-M (mouth)3.00.0
BFMDRS-M (speech/swallowing)3.02.0
BFMDRS-M (neck)3.01.5
Total BFMDRS-M8.00.0

Key Findings

  • 97.9% of patients were grade 4 on the Shorr grading scale preoperatively.
  • 87.5% of patients achieved complete remission (grade 0) postoperatively.
  • Significant reductions in BFMDRS-M scores were observed across all measured areas.
  • NCB did not result in severe local or systemic complications, such as facial paralysis.
  • The median follow-up period for patients was 51 months.

Clinical Implications

Clinicians should consider NCB as a treatment option for patients with blepharospasm.

Conclusion

Neural circuit blockade demonstrates efficacy in alleviating blepharospasm symptoms.
