Objective:

To evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the Baby Moves smartphone application for remote General Movements Assessment (GMA) in an Italian cohort of at-risk and healthy term infants.

Approach:
  • Study Design: Prospective observational feasibility cohort study.
  • Participants: 199 infants recruited, including 85 at-risk and 114 healthy term infants.
  • Intervention: Parents used the Baby Moves app to upload six 3-minute videos of their infant’s spontaneous movements.
  • Assessment: Videos were assessed by certified GMA evaluators blinded to clinical history.
Key Findings:
  • 91.9% of families downloaded and activated the app.
  • 91.5% of families submitted at least one video.
  • Mean number of uploaded videos was 4.3, with 58.3% submitting ≥5 videos.
  • Healthy term infants' families uploaded more videos than at-risk infants (mean 4.6 vs 3.8).
  • High usability and acceptability reported by parents, with challenges mainly related to connectivity or infant state.
Interpretation:

The Baby Moves app is feasible and acceptable for remote GMA in an Italian setting.

Limitations:
  • No clinically meaningful associations found with sociodemographic variables.
  • Challenges reported were primarily related to technology and infant behavior.
Conclusion:

High engagement across both at-risk and control families was observed.
