Postnatal maternal mental health-related hospitalisation and its association with adverse child health and maltreatment outcomes: narrative review
To synthesize current evidence on the association between postnatal maternal mental health-related hospitalisation (MHrH) and adverse child health and maltreatment outcomes, highlighting the critical need for understanding this relationship.
Key Findings:
Four studies suggest a possible association between postnatal maternal MHrH and adverse child health outcomes (growth failure, respiratory and gastrointestinal infections) or maltreatment (sexual, physical, and emotional abuse).
One study did not find a statistically significant association between postnatal maternal MHrH and infant growth.
Interpretation:
The available evidence suggests a possible association between postnatal maternal MHrH and adverse child health and maltreatment outcomes, but findings should be interpreted cautiously due to methodological heterogeneity and their implications for child welfare.
Limitations:
Small number of studies included in the review, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.
Methodological heterogeneity among the studies, which could introduce biases in the results.
Conclusion:
Further high-quality longitudinal research is needed to better understand the association between postnatal maternal MHrH and child outcomes, emphasizing the importance of addressing maternal mental health in public health strategies.
