A study evaluating the safety of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) found that initiating GLP-1 RAs did not lead to a higher rate of acute pancreatitis after one year compared to sulfonylureas among patients with type 2 diabetes. Analyzing data from 333,687 patients between 2017 and 2023, researchers noted a slight increase in suspected drug-induced pancreatitis shortly after initiation of GLP-1 RAs, but this was offset by lower rates of alcohol-induced and hypertriglyceridemia-associated pancreatitis later. The findings highlight the need for early monitoring when starting GLP-1 RAs. Most participants were older men, limiting the findings' generalizability.
