Light Exam May Detect Hidden Strangulation Injury

Documentation, photographs, and imaging referrals may support prosecution of nonfatal strangulation when external injuries are not visible

A comprehensive review highlights the significant health risks associated with nonfatal strangulation. Through a scoping review of 25 studies involving 959 patients, it was found that many individuals show no externally visible injuries, with alternate light source examinations identifying intradermal injuries in 98%. The review emphasizes the importance of thorough medical documentation and photographic evidence for legal proceedings, finding that women constitute 87% of victims. Additionally, the findings suggest that standardized assessment tools could enhance prosecution efforts. Supported by an Australian Research Council grant, this study is a crucial step in informing clinical practices around strangulation cases.
