To examine the characteristics and challenges of Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) involving service members and veterans in Colorado.

  • Study Design: Inductive content analysis of ERPO court records for 68 petitions involving service members and veterans from 2020 to 2024.

  • Service members and veterans were overrepresented in ERPO petitions (9.8%) compared to their adult population representation (7.8%).
  • Respondents were more often male, older, and had documented mental health concerns.
  • Challenges in serving ERPOs were noted, particularly for respondents lacking stable housing.
Limitations:
  • The study is limited to Colorado and may not represent ERPO functioning in other states.
  • Awareness of ERPOs among clinicians is limited, affecting their ability to act as petitioners.
