Long term survival of patients with alpha-fetoprotein-positive hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder: a case report and literature review
To report a case of a 66-year-old male with alpha-fetoprotein-positive hepatoid adenocarcinoma of the gallbladder and review existing literature on this rare cancer subtype.
Approach:
Case Presentation: A 66-year-old male with a history of hepatitis B presented with abdominal pain and elevated serum AFP. Imaging revealed a hypermetabolic gallbladder mass, leading to a diagnosis of AFP-positive hepatoid adenocarcinoma confirmed by histopathological and immunoh…
Surgical and Adjuvant Treatment: The patient underwent radical resection followed by adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) with epirubicin.
Key Findings:
The patient achieved a 68-month recurrence-free survival after treatment.
Next-generation sequencing revealed a TP53 mutation and EGFR copy number amplification.
Serum AFP levels normalized post-surgery and remained stable during follow-up.
Interpretation:
Limitations:
The rarity of the condition limits the generalizability of findings.
Long-term follow-up data is limited to a single case.
