Objective:

To systematically compare the efficacy and safety of acupuncture combined with various medications for postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP).

Approach:
  • Methodology: A systematic search of eight databases was conducted for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating acupuncture plus pharmacotherapy for PMOP, focusing on primary and secondary outcomes related to bone mineral density and clinical efficacy.
Key Findings:
  • For lumbar spine bone mineral density, Calcitriol combined with Electroacupuncture ranked highest.
  • For femoral neck bone mineral density, Calcitonin, vitamin D, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Fire dragon moxibustion ranked best.
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture showed the best clinical efficacy across various measures.
  • Acupuncture combined with pharmacotherapy produced differential benefits across various efficacy outcomes.
Interpretation:

Limitations:
  • Only one trial reported fracture data, with a follow-up period of 12 months or less, limiting the ability to draw conclusions about fracture prevention.
Conclusion:

Treatment selection should be individualized based on therapeutic priorities and patient characteristics.
