Research from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center highlights the potential of patient-reported symptom scores in identifying oropharyngeal cancer survivors at risk for delayed hypoglossal nerve neuropathy. The study, which reviewed data from 1,297 treated patients from 2015 to 2023, developed the MDASI-HN-NERVE score to reflect bulbar-related symptom burden. A significant correlation was found between higher symptom scores and the risk of neuropathy, suggesting symptom-based surveillance could be essential for risk stratification in survivors.
