Objective:

To assess whether using an intraoperative checklist alone can optimize conditions during colorectal surgery and reduce anastomotic leakage risk factors, while also evaluating its impact on complications and mortality.

Key Findings:
  • Patients in the checklist-only group had an average of 1.81 risk factors, while the care bundle group had 1.63.
  • Surgical complications were higher in the checklist-only group (26.6% vs. 18.3%).
  • Leakage rates were slightly higher in the checklist-only group (8.9% vs. 6.2%), but the difference was not statistically significant.
Interpretation:

Using a full care bundle with feedback significantly improved intraoperative conditions and reduced complications compared to using a checklist alone.

Limitations:
  • The study was non-randomized and conducted in a limited number of hospitals, which may introduce bias.
  • Results may not fully represent broader clinical practice due to the study's controlled environment.
Conclusion:

While the checklist alone showed some benefit, the combination with the care bundle and feedback was more effective in reducing complications and optimizing surgical conditions.
