Multidimensional profile of functional cognitive disorders: the experience of the memory clinic in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, sub-Saharan Africa
To examine the epidemiological, clinical, and neuropsychological aspects of functional cognitive disorders (FCD) in Côte d’Ivoire.
Approach:
Study Design: Retrospective, multicenter, descriptive and analytical study conducted from 2018 to 2023.
Patient Inclusion: Included patients aged 18 and older with no neurological abnormalities and an internal inconsistency between reported symptoms and neuropsychological evaluation.
Cognitive Assessment: Cognitive deficits were assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test.
Key Findings:
25 cases of FCD were identified, representing 10.2% of total consultations.
The most represented age group was 45–54 years old (52%) with an average age of 45.8 years.
56% of patients had a university education; 48% worked in the public sector.
Mental health disorders were the most common comorbidity (52%).
Memory disorders were the primary reason for consultation (72%).
The mean MoCA score was 23.2 ± 5.9, with memory (44%) and attention (28.3%) being the most affected cognitive abilities.
Interpretation:
This study is the first of its kind in Côte d’Ivoire and contributes to the understanding of FCD in sub-Saharan Africa, where data is scarce.
Limitations:
Retrospective design may limit the comprehensiveness of data.
Study conducted in two private referral centers may not represent the broader population.
Conclusion:
This study is the first of its kind in Côte d’Ivoire and contributes to the understanding of FCD in sub-Saharan Africa, where data is scarce.
