Objective:

To describe and compare the variations in cytokines IL-2, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and IFN-γ in DENV, CHIKV, ZIKV, and MAYV infections in northeastern Peru.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • Distinct cytokine profiles were observed for each arbovirus.
    • Elevations in IL-10 and IFN-γ were linked to dengue severity.
    • ZIKV infection showed increased levels of IFN-γ, IL-1ra, IL-7, IL-9, and RANTES.
    • MAYV infections were associated with significant pro-inflammatory cytokine expressions.
    Interpretation:

The study highlights the importance of cytokine profiles in differentiating arboviral infections, which can aid in diagnosis and management in endemic regions.

    Limitations:
    • The study was limited to a specific geographic region and may not be generalizable.
    • Sample size for each group was relatively small (20 patients each).
    Conclusion:

Characterizing cytokine profiles can enhance diagnostic accuracy and clinical outcomes for arboviral diseases in regions like Peru.
