Millions Could Miss Out on Cataract Surgery
Why action is needed to embed better eye care practices throughout Africa and Asia
Recent analysis from the International Centre for Eye Health reveals that global efforts to improve cataract surgery coverage are falling significantly short of targets set at the 2021 World Health Assembly. While a 30 percentage point increase is desired by 2030, the predicted global increase is only 8.4 percentage points, with Africa seeing an even smaller rise. Factors such as gender inequity, lack of resources, and inadequate access for communities hinder progress. Sightsavers, along with other organizations, is actively addressing these challenges in Africa and Asia by improving healthcare integration and education.
