A recent study has highlighted the 'Halo Sign,' an optical phenomenon seen during slit-lamp examination of the iris in advanced keratoconus (KC). Initially described by He and Qu in a 2025 case report, the Halo Sign differs from traditional indicators as it is tied to optical effects in the ectatic cornea rather than biochemical changes. Observed in 8 out of 22 eyes in advanced KC, the sign may indicate significant structural deformation. The Halo Morphology Index (HMI) suggests that varying geometries of the halo correlate with disease severity and visual impairment, potentially guiding further clinical evaluations.
