Objective:

To evaluate the association of probiotics and/or a low-FODMAP diet with clinical and inflammatory outcomes in adults with mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis (UC).

Key Findings:
  • The low-FODMAP + probiotic group showed the greatest reduction in Mayo score (−2.4 ± 0.8; p < 0.001).
  • 60% of the low-FODMAP + probiotic group achieved clinical remission.
  • Significant improvement in CRP (−3.5 ± 1.8 mg/L) and FCal (−180 ± 70 μg/g) was observed in the combined treatment group.
Interpretation:

The combined low-FODMAP diet and probiotic regimen was associated with clinical and inflammatory outcomes in adults with mild-to-moderate UC, but findings should not be interpreted as proof of synergy due to the lack of formal statistical interaction testing.

Limitations:
  • The study is retrospective and observational, limiting causal inferences.
  • A formal statistical interaction test was not performed.
Conclusion:

The integrated nutritional–microbial strategy represents an approach for personalized UC management.
