Objective:

To assess the dynamics of various cytokines in people with HIV who transition from a three-drug regimen to a dolutegravir-based two-drug regimen, focusing on inflammation.

Key Findings:
  • No virological failure or transient low-level viremia was observed during the study.
  • At month 12, plasma concentrations of MIG increased from 2785 pg/mL to 2966 pg/mL (p = 0.017).
  • Plasma concentrations of IL-18 increased from 63.33 pg/mL to 75.10 pg/mL (p = 0.009).
  • IL-6 and IP-10 levels remained stable throughout the study period.
  • The increase in IL-18 was not correlated with changes in IL-18BP.
Interpretation:

Limitations:
  • The study had a small sample size of 35 participants.
  • The exploratory extension analysis was limited to a subset of 6 participants.
Conclusion:

Increased levels of IL-18 and MIG were observed at 12 months after switching to a two-drug regimen, while IL-6 and IP-10 levels remained stable.
