Objective:

To compare the prescribed anti-epileptic drug cost of patients receiving ketogenic diet therapy (KDT) to the initial pre-diet cost.

Approach:
  • Study Design: Descriptive analytical retrospective study using outpatient medical records from Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.
  • Participants: Patients aged 5–18 years with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent KDT for up to 6 months.
  • Cost Evaluation: Comparison of outpatient anti-epileptic drug costs before and after KDT at 3-month intervals.
  • Parental Satisfaction Survey: Parents surveyed about their satisfaction with KDT using a Google Form questionnaire.
Key Findings:
  • 21.8% overall reduction in outpatient anti-epileptic drug costs after 6 months of KDT.
  • Statistically significant cost reduction of Rp 3,757,812 or 235 US$ (p < 0.001).
Interpretation:

Limitations:
  • Single-center study may limit generalizability.
  • Small sample size of 16 patients.
