To analyze cases of multiple primary tumors (MPT) within patients treated for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and propose a scenario-based framework for their management, addressing the challenges of MPT.
Key Findings:
Among 274 patients treated for HNSCC, 15 (5.5%) were identified as having MPT.
MPT cases included combinations of laryngeal and oropharyngeal carcinomas, salivary gland tumors, hepatocellular carcinoma, prostate cancer, and renal tumors.
Systematic diagnostic work-up, multidisciplinary discussion, and tailored use of contemporary modalities were noted.
Interpretation:
Limitations:
The study is limited to a specific tertiary care setting and may not be generalizable to all populations.
The observational nature of the study may introduce biases in data collection and interpretation.
Conclusion:
A scenario-based framework operationalized through a clinical matrix provides a tool to standardize evaluation and align treatment options with patient prognosis and comorbidities.
