Objective:

To evaluate the bidirectional epidemiological association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and atrial fibrillation (AF), and their combined impact on prognosis.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • AF was associated with a higher risk of COPD (OR = 1.56, 95% CI 1.06–2.29).
    • COPD was associated with a higher risk of AF (OR = 1.72, 95% CI 1.42–2.09).
    • AF in COPD patients was linked to increased short-term (OR = 1.76) and long-term (OR = 1.27) mortality risks.
    • COPD in AF patients was associated with increased short-term (OR = 1.54) and long-term (OR = 1.68) mortality risks.
    Interpretation:

The study indicates a bidirectional observational association between COPD and AF, with their coexistence linked to increased mortality risk.

    Limitations:
    • Observational nature of included studies limits causal inferences.
    • Substantial heterogeneity among studies may affect the reliability of findings.
    Conclusion:

The findings highlight the bidirectional association between COPD and AF.
