A meta-analysis published in JAMA reveals that treatment with digitalis glycosides is linked to a decreased risk of worsening heart failure (HF) events in patients with heart failure with reduced or mildly reduced ejection fraction. The analysis pooled data from three randomized trials involving over 9,000 patients and identified a 15% relative reduction in the primary composite outcome, primarily driven by decreased worsening heart failure events. However, no significant reductions in mortality were observed. This research highlights the potential implications of digitalis glycosides in contemporary heart failure management, especially in patients receiving optimized background therapy.
