Medical Oddities: A fowl cause of urinary obstruction

A rogue chicken bone, stalled sweat, yoga for IBS, and L-theanine for sleep is break room fodder this week.

To report a unique case of urinary obstruction caused by a chicken bone in an elderly patient.

Intervention: After conservative antibiotic management failed, an antegrade nephroureteric stent was placed, relieving the obstruction.

The chicken bone caused severe hydroureteronephrosis and renal parenchymal atrophy.
This case represents the first reported instance of obstructive uropathy due to an ingested foreign body.

The case illustrates the potential for unusual causes of urinary obstruction in elderly patients.

The prior CT findings from 3 years earlier did not identify the chicken bone as the cause of obstruction.

The case highlights the importance of considering atypical causes of urinary obstruction.
