Objective:

To compare early postoperative patient-reported health state, functional outcomes, global preference, and willingness to recommend an elastic abdominal binder and a semi-rigid lumbar corset following open sublay repair of large ventral hernias.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • Median VAS scores were 70 for the elastic binder and 80 for the semi-rigid corset, with no statistically significant difference (p = 0.36).
    • No EQ-5D-5 L domain was rated worse with the semi-rigid corset compared to the elastic binder.
    Interpretation:

Both devices were tolerated similarly in terms of patient-reported health state.

    Limitations:
    • Small sample size of 23 patients may limit generalizability.
    • Study conducted at a single center may introduce bias.
    Conclusion:

Both elastic abdominal binders and semi-rigid corsets were similarly tolerated in the early postoperative period following ventral hernia repair.
