Objective:

To investigate the association between eyelash extensions and ocular health issues in young women.

Approach:
  • Study Design: Surveyed 345 women aged 16–28 years regarding their use of eyelash extensions and associated symptoms.
  • Meibography Assessment: Assessed meibomian gland function in participants who had undergone eyelash extension procedures.
  • Microscopic Analysis: Examined eyelash samples for Demodex folliculorum mites and associated inflammation.
Key Findings:
  • 47.6% of eyelash extension users reported discomfort, redness, tearing, or itching.
  • 85% of women with at least 10 eyelash extension procedures showed signs of meibomian gland dysfunction.
  • D. folliculorum mites were detected in 24 out of 25 eyelash samples, with signs of inflammation in 18 participants.
Limitations:
  • The study was small and lacked a control group of women who had never used eyelash extensions.
  • Larger comparative studies are needed to establish definitive relationships.
