Objective:

To examine and synthesise the methodological approaches used to implement digital phenotyping (DP) systems for mental health conditions.

Approach:
  • Methodology: A systematic search across seven databases for primary empirical studies using smartphone or wearable-based DP in clinically diagnosed mental health populations, assessing study quality with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT).
Key Findings:
  • Forty-sevenstudieswereincluded,primarilyfromhigh-incomecountries,focusingonconditionssuchasschizophrenia,bipolardisorder,andmajordepressivedisorder.Significantheterogeneitywasobservedinthetypesofdigitaldevicesused,sensingmodalities,preprocessingstrategies,featuredefinitions,andanalyticaltechniquesacrossstudies.
Interpretation:

DP faces challenges due to methodological heterogeneity and inconsistent reporting.

Limitations:
  • Theconcentrationofevidenceinhigh-incomesettingslimitsgeneralizability.Additionally,thelackofstandardizedimplementationandreportingprotocolshindersreproducibility.
Conclusion:

Standardized protocols may enhance the reliability of DP.
