A cross-sectional study published in JAMA Network Open reveals that older patients disproportionately initiate medications adversely affecting cognition following acute or postacute care encounters. Analyzed data from 2008-2021 included 4,955 new medication-class initiations among community-dwelling Medicare beneficiaries aged 66 and older. Researchers found significant continuity in medication use a year later, highlighting the need for thorough medication reviews in these vulnerable populations. Lead researcher Dr. Dan P. Ly suggests that interventions to reduce such prescriptions should focus on acute care transitions.
