To report a rare case of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) arising in the ileocecal region, contributing novel anatomical and clinical information.
Approach:
Case Presentation: A 62-year-old male presented with right lower abdominal pain for two days. A firm, fixed mass approximately 10 cm in diameter was palpable in his right lower abdomen. Abdominal CT and colonoscopy revealed features suggestive of a malignant neoplasm, including a large, irregularly shaped tumor with infiltrative growth, hemorrhagic erosion, and enlarged regional lymph nodes. Due to concomitant intestinal obstruction symptoms, the patient underwent laparoscopic radical right hemicolectomy.
Pathological Examination: Postoperative histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of high-grade MPNST.
Key Findings:
This case represents the first reported instance of MPNST in the ileocecal region, highlighting the diagnostic challenges due to overlapping features with other colonic tumors.
Definitive diagnosis was achieved through postoperative pathological examination and immunohistochemistry.
Interpretation:
Surgical resection with confirmed tumor-free margins is the preferred treatment approach for MPNST.
Limitations:
The rarity of MPNST in the gastrointestinal tract limits generalizability and may lead to misdiagnosis due to overlapping features with other tumors.
Conclusion:
This case highlights the diagnostic challenges associated with MPNST and the necessity of histopathological confirmation.
