A comprehensive analysis of over 16,000 US adolescents revealed significant disparities in human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake at both the state and regional levels. Conducted using data from the 2023 National Immunization Survey-Teen, the study identified that HPV vaccination initiation was notably lower in Southern states, with Mississippi, Georgia, Kentucky, and West Virginia exhibiting the worst rates. In contrast, Rhode Island showed the highest uptake, with about 3 times the odds of vaccination compared to Alabama, the reference state. The findings highlight the complexity of vaccination behaviors, indicating that state-level variations can mask overall regional trends. Researchers caution that further investigation into influencing factors like vaccination policies and parental attitudes is needed to enhance uptake.
