Recent research into combined small-cell lung cancer (cSCLC) equips clinicians with new insights regarding the tumor's heterogeneity, emphasizing the challenges in accurately diagnosing this rare cancer subtype with limited biopsy samples. The study utilized advanced spatial multi-omics techniques on 19 untreated tumors, revealing a predominance of shared mutations indicating a singular clonal origin. Importantly, the findings show distinct spatial arrangements of tumor components and variations in the surrounding microenvironment, which can complicate diagnoses. A newly developed mutation-based assay aims to enhance diagnosis accuracy in challenging scenarios.
