Otolaryngology surgeons face significant ergonomic risks and increased pain during head and neck surgeries, according to a prospective study involving 17 surgeons across 80 operations. Utilizing the Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), researchers measured ergonomic strain and assessed pain scores pre- and postoperatively. Findings revealed that 37% of attending and 43% of resident surgeons had RULA scores indicating medium to high ergonomic risk. Notably, pain levels were higher in more challenging cases and worsened during longer surgeries, particularly in surgeons over 40. The study stresses the necessity for improved ergonomic training and equipment adjustments to protect surgeons' health.
