Assessment of cardioprotective activity of a nitrate enriched food-based polyherbal formulation using experimental myocardial infarction in rats
To investigate the therapeutic potential of a nitrate-enriched extract from Amaranthus leaves (Oxystorm) and its blend with curcuminoids enriched turmeric extract (BCM-95) in a rat model of myocardial infarction (MI).
Approach:
Study Design: Wistar rats were divided into groups including control, positive control (verapamil), and treatment groups receiving different doses of Oxystorm and its turmeric blend.
Assessment Methods: Cardiac injury biomarkers (LDH, CK-MB, myoglobin, troponin I) and inflammatory biomarkers (IL-6, TNF-α) were measured post-reperfusion.
Key Findings:
LAD-induced MI significantly increased cardiac injury and inflammation biomarkers.
Oxystorm and its turmeric blend reduced levels of LDH, CK-MB, troponin-I, interleukins, and malondialdehyde.
Treatment improved antioxidant defense markers (GSH and SOD) and reduced infarct size.
Interpretation:
Oxystorm combined with turmeric extract demonstrated cardioprotective effects linked to reduced oxidative stress and inflammation.
Limitations:
Nitric oxide bioavailability and related signaling pathways were not directly assessed.
Conclusion:
Oxystorm and its turmeric combination may have potential applications in managing ischemia and related cardiac diseases.
For decades, open-heart surgery was the only treatment option for people with severe aortic valve disease. Patients too sick to withstand major surgery often faced a steady decline in heart function.
