A population-based cohort study published in JAMA Dermatology by Blomberg Drejøe et al. investigated the long-term risk of skin cancer in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Analyzing data from Danish health registries, the study involved 8,352 CLL patients and 41,760 matched controls. Findings revealed a significant increase in 10-year skin cancer risk among CLL patients (13.5%) compared to controls (6.9%), especially for basal and squamous cell carcinomas. The study also reported earlier onset of skin cancer in CLL patients, emphasizing the need for enhanced patient counseling and surveillance strategies.
