Objective:

To enhance understanding of the landscape of digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) in the Greater China region by examining available evidence, assessing accessibility, and identifying research and implementation gaps.

Key Findings:
  • Majority of DMHIs were mobile-based and trialed in economically developed regions.
  • Most DMHIs showed significant improvements in reducing mental health symptoms.
  • Concerns include limited public access, high heterogeneity in study quality, and lack of population-based early interventions.
Interpretation:

The rise of DMHIs offers a promising solution to support the overburdened mental healthcare system in China, particularly given the high smartphone penetration and technological proficiency among the population.

Limitations:
  • Limited public access to DMHIs.
  • High variability in the quality of studies.
  • Insufficient focus on early interventions for the general population.
Conclusion:

Future research is needed to address the identified issues within Chinese communities and the mental healthcare system to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of DMHIs.
