Objective:

To compare the skin microbiome of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) from two municipalities in São Paulo State, Brazil, differing in urban exposome exposure.

Approach:
  • Study Design: Cross-sectional comparative investigation involving ten children and ten adults with active AD from a metropolitan area and a less polluted interior municipality.
  • Sample Collection: Skin microbiome specimens were collected from eczematous lesions in the antecubital or popliteal fossae.
Key Findings:
  • No differences in overall bacterial diversity were observed between municipalities or age groups.
  • Patients from the metropolitan municipality showed significantly greater relative abundance of Staphylococcus aureus.
Limitations:
  • The study did not include paired simultaneous ambient concentration measurements from both municipalities.
  • The sample size was limited to twenty participants.
