Objective:

To assess the efficacy of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) as primary treatment for open-angle glaucoma in treatment-naïve black patients in south east Nigeria.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • SLT resulted in significant IOP reduction in treatment-naïve patients (p < 0.05).
    • Success defined as IOP reduction of ≥ 3 mmHg or ≥ 20% from baseline.
    • Efficacy of SLT aligns with findings from previous studies in other populations.
    Interpretation:

SLT is an effective initial treatment for open-angle glaucoma in the studied population, showing promising IOP reduction and medication savings, which could influence clinical practice in Nigeria.

    Limitations:
    • Retrospective design may introduce bias, potentially affecting the reliability of the results.
    • Lack of standardized IOP measurements across patients.
    Conclusion:

SLT is a viable first-line treatment for glaucoma in south eastern Nigeria, though barriers to implementation, such as cost and training, remain.
