Influence of age, body mass index and family income on the health Quality of Life among the breast cancer patients in Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study
To investigate the influence of BMI, age, and socioeconomic status on QoL among breast cancer patients in Bangladesh.
Approach:
Study Design: Cross-sectional study conducted among 200 female breast cancer patients at the Shanti Oncology and Palliative Care Foundation in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Data Collection: Participants were interviewed using validated EORTC questionnaires (QLQ-C30 and BR23) to assess QoL.
Data Analysis: Descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk test for normality, and logistic/linear regression models were used to evaluate associations.
Key Findings:
Mean age of participants was 49.5 years (SD 9.02); 52.5% were overweight.
Age and family income were significant predictors of QoL (p < 0.001).
Older age associated with lower global health scores (β = –4.68; 95% CI: –6.68 to –2.67) and higher insomnia (β = 6.45; 95% CI: 0.45 to 12.46) and dyspnea scores (β = 5.64; 95% CI: 0.45 to 10.84).
Higher family income linked to better cancer localization (AOR = 1.51, 95% CI: 1.02–2.23), treatment modalities, and lower financial difficulties.
Interpretation:
The overall QoL score was poor among Bangladeshi breast cancer patients, with age and family income being significant factors.
Limitations:
Study limited to a single healthcare center, which may affect generalizability.
Cross-sectional design limits causal inferences.
Conclusion:
Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to explore the association between BMI and QoL among breast cancer patients.
