Exercise may protect memory after sleep loss
A 20-minute exercise bout and 90-minute nap produced similar episodic memory performance following 30 hours of wakefulness but engaged distinct neural mechanisms.
To investigate the effects of a 20-minute exercise bout and a 90-minute nap on episodic memory performance following 30 hours of wakefulness.
Approach:
Study Design: A randomized laboratory study involving 54 healthy participants aged 18 to 35 years, assessing memory performance after 30 hours of wakefulness with three interventions: exercise, napping, and a control period.
Memory Assessment: Participants viewed 150 images during an encoding session followed by a surprise recognition test 3 days later, with behavioral analyses focusing on hit rates and EEG markers.
Key Findings:
Hit rates were 21% higher after exercise and 23% higher after napping compared to control, with large effect sizes (Cohen d = 1.0 and 0.91, respectively).
Mean hit rates were 0.56 for exercise, 0.57 for nap, and 0.46 for control.
Participants who napped reported less postintervention fatigue than those in the exercise and control groups.
EEG findings indicated distinct neural mechanisms for exercise and napping in supporting memory.
Exercise facilitated efficient neural processing, while napping created a brain state conducive to new learning.
Limitations:
Laboratory-induced acute sleep deprivation may not reflect chronic sleep insufficiency.
Education, socioeconomic status, and occupation were not assessed.
No separate nap-control group was included.
Intervention durations differed, which may have affected outcomes.
