Objective:

To report a case of ectopic recurrence of craniopharyngioma (CP) and review relevant literature on its clinical features, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.

Approach:
  • Case Presentation: A 67-year-old male with blurred vision was diagnosed with adamantinomatous CP in the sellar region. Four years post-surgery, he developed ectopic recurrence in the right temporal lobe due to implantation metastasis along the surgical tract.
  • Literature Review: The review included 72 patients with recurrent CP, focusing on the characteristics and management of ectopic recurrence.
Key Findings:
  • Ectopic recurrence of CP is primarily linked to tumor cell dissemination and implantation along the surgical tract or cerebrospinal fluid spread.
  • The adamantinomatous variant is the predominant subtype associated with recurrence.
  • Standardized intraoperative techniques and maximal resection of the primary lesion are essential preventive strategies.
Interpretation:

Limitations:
  • The study is based on a single case report and a limited literature review.
Conclusion:
