To report a case of ectopic recurrence of craniopharyngioma (CP) and review relevant literature on its clinical features, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.
Approach:
Case Presentation: A 67-year-old male with blurred vision was diagnosed with adamantinomatous CP in the sellar region. Four years post-surgery, he developed ectopic recurrence in the right temporal lobe due to implantation metastasis along the surgical tract.
Literature Review: The review included 72 patients with recurrent CP, focusing on the characteristics and management of ectopic recurrence.
Key Findings:
Ectopic recurrence of CP is primarily linked to tumor cell dissemination and implantation along the surgical tract or cerebrospinal fluid spread.
The adamantinomatous variant is the predominant subtype associated with recurrence.
Standardized intraoperative techniques and maximal resection of the primary lesion are essential preventive strategies.
Interpretation:
Limitations:
The study is based on a single case report and a limited literature review.
