Objective:

To identify factors influencing individual hearing loss risk in NICU neonates.

Approach:
  • Meta-Analysis: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to evaluate the associations between various factors and hearing loss in NICU neonates.
Key Findings:
  • Significant associations with hearing loss were found linked to ototoxic drugs, craniofacial anomalies, family history of hearing loss, surgical ligation of PDA, and TORCH infections (all P ≤ 0.05).
  • No significant correlations were found with low Apgar score, prematurity, low birth weight, duration of vancomycin exposure, sex, or sepsis.
  • Very low birth weight (<1,500 g) did not show a significant risk of hearing loss (OR = 3.05, P = 0.19).
  • Postnatal hypoxia/severe birth asphyxia and sepsis also showed no significant association with hearing loss.
Interpretation:

The lack of significant correlation between low birth weight and hearing loss may be influenced by heterogeneity and confounding factors.

Limitations:
  • Limited number of studies included in the analysis.
  • Potential confounding factors such as concurrent perinatal adversities.
Conclusion:

The article has been revised to correct errors and clarify findings regarding factors influencing hearing loss risk in NICU neonates.
