Treating CME Without Reactivating Retinitis
Data from a retrospective Emory Eye Center series suggest most eyes with CME following infectious retinitis achieved resolution without disease reactivation, although prolonged treatment and close monitoring were often required.
To evaluate the management of cystoid macular edema (CME) in patients with a history of infectious retinitis.
Approach:
Study Design: Retrospective review of 53 eyes in 44 patients at Emory Eye Center.
Treatment Methods: Primarily used topical steroid drops; local and systemic steroids were used less frequently due to concerns about disease reactivation.
Key Findings:
75% of eyes (40/53) achieved resolution of CME by the follow-up period.
8 additional eyes showed marked improvement.
No cases of disease reactivation were observed.
Intraocular pressure increased in a few patients but was managed with observation or drops.
