To highlight cases where natural remedies can lead to serious health issues.
Approach:
Case Study: A 7-year-old developed acute liver failure after taking an herbal treatment for jaundice, which contained toxic levels of arsenic and lead.
Key Findings:
The herbal product contained arsenic (5.82 ppm) and lead (2.97 ppm).
The child had markedly elevated serum arsenic (1.24 ppm).
Despite intensive care, the child died from sepsis and multiorgan failure.
Whole-exome sequencing revealed pathogenic findings suggestive of Rotor syndrome.
Interpretation:
Limitations:
The relationship between Rotor syndrome and arsenic-induced liver failure is debatable.
