A follow-up study from the ALPS trial found no significant difference in childhood respiratory impairment between children exposed to antenatal betamethasone and those exposed to placebo. Among 1,218 participants aged 6 or older, the rate of respiratory issues was similar in both groups at 35% for betamethasone and 36% for placebo. While short-term benefits of betamethasone during late preterm delivery are established, this study suggests that it does not improve long-term pulmonary outcomes in children, highlighting the influence of late preterm birth itself on respiratory health.
