Objective:

To evaluate whether a six-hour training program delivered by geriatricians improves family physicians’ knowledge of and understanding of geriatric syndromes.

Approach:
  • Participants: Twenty-two family physicians participated in the 'Older Patient Care and Seek Course' during an international congress.
  • Assessment: Participants completed an 18-item pre-test and post-test measuring knowledge on topics such as preventive care, polypharmacy, pressure injuries, malnutrition, and cognitive impairment.
  • Training Format: The program included six hours of face-to-face, interactive presentations addressing major geriatric syndromes.
Key Findings:
  • The mean pre-test score was 9.00 ± 1.74 and increased to 14.59 ± 1.89 on the post-test.
  • The pre- to post-test difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01).
Limitations:
  • The study involved a small sample size of 22 participants.
  • The assessment was limited to a single-day educational program.
