Objective:

To examine the integration of Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the rehabilitation of a child with ADHD, contributing to the understanding of combined therapeutic approaches.

Approach:
  • Case Presentation: An 8-year-old child diagnosed with combined-type ADHD underwent a 12-week CBT intervention followed by a 12-week integrated IVR-CBT intervention using the CAREN platform. Baseline assessments revealed deficits in sustained and selective attention, impaired executive functioning, impulsivity, and difficulties in motor regulation.
Key Findings:
  • Post-intervention assessments showed improvements in sustained and selective attention, planning, working memory, and balance.
  • There was an increase in involvement and a reduction in impulsivity.
Interpretation:

The findings suggest that immersive, embodied interventions targeting both executive and sensorimotor processes may represent a novel approach in rehabilitation, warranting further investigation.

Limitations:
  • Further studies are needed to evaluate efficacy and generalizability, particularly given the limitations of a single-subject case report.
Conclusion:

The study indicates that combining IVR with CBT may have potential in the treatment of children with ADHD, but further research is necessary to confirm these findings.
