Eyelash Extensions Linked to Demodex Folliculorum

Study among young women who regularly have eyelash extensions found that most have Demodex folliculorum.

Objective:

To investigate the presence of Demodex folliculorum mites in young women who regularly use eyelash extensions and assess associated symptoms.

Approach:

Survey: A survey of 345 women aged 16 to 28 was conducted to gather data on eyelash extension usage and symptoms.
Meibography: Meibography was used to assess meibomian gland function among participants.
Microscopic Examination: Eyelash samples from 25 women were examined microscopically for the presence of Demodex folliculorum.

Key Findings:

25% of surveyed women had ever used eyelash extensions.
58% had eyelash extensions every 3 to 4 weeks.
47.6% reported discomfort, redness, tearing, or itching post-procedure.
85% of women with at least 10 eyelash extension applications showed signs of meibomian gland dysfunction.
Demodex folliculorum was found in 24 out of 25 women examined.

Interpretation:

The study investigates a potential link between eyelash extensions and the presence of Demodex folliculorum, as well as associated symptoms of irritation and meibomian gland dysfunction.
