Objective:

To evaluate the short-term effects of 15 g oral glucose solution on blood glucose levels and blood pressure in older patients with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • The incidence of hypoglycemia and time below range during hemodialysis and within 2 hours post-hemodialysis were significantly reduced (P < 0.05).
    • Mean blood glucose levels were significantly higher after the intervention (P < 0.05).
    • No significant difference in the incidence of hypotension or blood pressure measurements before and after the intervention was observed (P > 0.05).
    Interpretation:

Oral glucose supplementation was associated with a short-term reduction in hypoglycemia without increasing hypotension in older patients with diabetes undergoing hemodialysis.

    Limitations:
    • Small sample size of 12 patients limits generalizability.
    • Study evaluated only acute short-term effects rather than long-term outcomes.
    Conclusion:

The administration of 15 g of glucose solution during hemodialysis was associated with a reduction in hypoglycemia in older diabetic patients without an observed increase in hypotension.
