Pinhole Optics Meet Cataract Surgery
Small-aperture IOL shows promise for cataract patients with pre-existing corneal comorbidities
Objective:
To evaluate the outcomes of the IC-8 pinhole intraocular lens (IOL) in patients with cataract and significant corneal comorbidities.
Approach:
- Study Design: Retrospective review of 67 eyes from 45 patients who underwent IC-8 IOL implantation.
- Patient Demographics: Included patients with keratoconus, previous corneal transplantation, radial keratotomy, corneal scarring, and herpetic keratopathy.
- IOL Design: The IC-8 lens features a 1.36 mm central aperture to reduce optical aberrations.
Key Findings:
- Mean corrected distance visual acuity improved from 0.56 logMAR preoperatively to 0.16 logMAR postoperatively.
- 61.1% of eyes achieved 6/9 vision or better; 75.9% reached 6/12 vision or better.
- Mean postoperative spherical equivalent refraction was −0.17 D, with over 50% of eyes within 0.50 D of target.
- Nearly 70% of keratoconic eyes achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 6/9 or better.
