Objective:

To describe the feasibility, safety, and early outcomes of using the Impella 5.5 as temporary left ventricular support during isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in high-risk patients.

Key Findings:
  • 16 patients included; median age 59 years, 93.8% male, median preoperative LVEF 20.5%.
  • 81.3% (13 patients) successfully weaned off Impella support.
  • In-hospital mortality was 18.8% (3 patients), with rhythm complications occurring in 56.3% of patients.
Interpretation:

Impella 5.5 support is feasible in high-risk CABG patients with LV dysfunction, showing acceptable short-term outcomes despite the complexity of cases.

Limitations:
  • Small sample size limits generalizability.
  • Retrospective design may introduce selection bias.
Conclusion:

Impella 5.5 may serve as an effective adjunct to surgical revascularization in carefully selected high-risk CABG patients.
