Objective:

To assess the prevalence of depression and anxiety pre- and post-bariatric surgery and explore factors associated with post-surgical depression and anxiety.

Approach:
    Key Findings:
    • Twenty-seven participants completed the pre-surgery questionnaire, and 23 completed the post-surgery questionnaire.
    • Mean GAD-7 score decreased from 6.0 to 5.2 (p=0.565).
    • Mean PHQ-9 score decreased from 7.5 to 5.9 (p=0.430).
    • Proportion screening positive for GAD-7 decreased from 26.1% to 17.4% (p=0.475).
    • Proportion screening positive for PHQ-9 decreased from 26.1% to 13.0% (p=0.265).
    • Post-surgical complications were associated with worse anxiety and depression trajectories.
    Interpretation:

    Limitations:
    • Small sample size with only 23 matched participants.
    • Follow-up completion time varied significantly among participants.
