Objective:
To review the clinical features of orbital metastases from breast carcinoma and describe four additional patients.
Approach:
Key Findings:
- Sixty-nine cases of breast carcinoma metastatic to the orbit were reviewed from 63 articles.
- 96% of patients were female, with an average age of 60 years at presentation (range: 31–83).
- 43% of patients had orbital metastasis as the initial manifestation of breast cancer.
- 51% of reported primary tumors were lobular carcinoma, and 43% were ductal carcinoma.
- Common presenting symptoms included diplopia (65%) and decreased or blurry vision (48%).
Interpretation:
Metastatic breast cancer is increasingly characterized by improved survival and prolonged disease control in selected patients.
Limitations:
- The search was limited to a single database, potentially omitting relevant cases indexed elsewhere.
- Documentation of survival time was inconsistent across studies.
Conclusion:
In patients with a history of breast cancer, metastatic disease should be considered in those presenting with orbital pathology.
